Transit Insurance:
PLEASE NOTE: AUSTRALIA POST HAS MADE SOME CHANGES RECENTLY TO THE COUNTRIES THEY WILL INSURE TO.
Following are some countries that do not, or no longer carry insurance for airmail shipments.
Afghanistan Bermuda Canada Germany Mexico
If you insist on insurance you may need to upgrade to a higher level of delivery service
Here is a brief breakdown of the insurance costs:
Firstly Purchases over US$300 must be insured. Insurance is US$12 for 1st $100 + US$6 for every additional US$100 or part thereof. Insurance is automaticly selected at the checkout.
For more expensive purchases:
Most freight companies will not insure precious gems or jewellery. For this very reason if you choose to use E.C.I. or Federal Express as your shipping method you have the option of private insurance. The charge for this is $12 plus $6 per $100 insured.
The main reason freight companies don't insure valuables, is that the value along with a full and complete description of the artical, must be declaired on the package. This is basicly putting a "Please Steal Me sticker" on the parcel. With private insurance neither the description or the value is declaired on the parcel, hence it looks just like any other parcel, and therefore no more or less likely at risk of theft.
If you choose not to insure your opal/s you must "deselect" the insurance option at the checkout. By deselecting this option you are stating that you are fully aware of the risk and take full responsability for the loss.
Australia Post will not insure airmail parcels to some countries. Follow this link to Australia Post's international website for further information http://www1.auspost.com.au/international/
