TheRoad between Grawin and Glengarry
Grawin Opal Fields

The word opal comes from the Greek word opallios which means "to see a change of color". Opal is a non-crystallized silica gel with a formula of SiO2.nH2O (n being a variable number). Opal contains water which varies from 5 -10% and greater.

This silica gel seeped its way between cracks and crevices in the sedimentary strata. Over millions of years, the gel hardened with the help of natural heating and pressure from earth, forming the opal that is so highly sought after today.

Unlike other gemstones, no two opals are alike. The opal is fascinating, producing prismatic colours that change depending on the angle of observation. (See: How the colours work for more information)
